Period 1 Music/Intervention/Enrichment
Each student will be scheduled into a Music class in 6th and 7th grade. Our schedule operates on an A and B day rotation. For example, if a student signed up for choir (or band) in 6th grade they would have that class every other day. The day opposite of Choir would be dedicated to intervention/enrichment.
- Intervention is for students struggling in a particular subject area. During this time they can meet with any of their teachers or, if appropriate, an interventionist who would help them with specialized instruction.
- Enrichment is for students who excel in a subject area. During this time, they can be challenged with additional tasks designed to further enhance their level of understanding in a particular area.
- Intervention/Enrichment will operate on a spectrum for students, and is designed to meet their most immediate needs. Some students may only need time to meet with their teachers for homework help, to ask questions, or they may take the time to work collaboratively on a project.
If a student signs up for both Band and Choir they would have these classes on opposite days and forgo intervention/enrichment.
Core blocks
Sixth and seventh grade schedules will have 114 minute core blocks designed to provide flexibility in the number of minutes allotted to the core content areas. Students will have two core blocks built into each day.
- One will be dedicated to ELA and Social Studies
- The other to Math and Science.
Students will have the same teacher for the entire core block. This means that each teacher will teach two core subject areas. (See “Teacher Teams”)
Exploratory Block
Exploratory classes promote academic and career planning (ACP). We offer a wide array of classes each designed to help a student identify where their interests overlap with their talents. We offer students classes in the areas of:
- Career and Technical Education
- Family and Consumer Education
- Foreign Language
- Fine Arts
In middle school we require all students to take classes in all of these areas. This is to ensure they are exposed to each subject area and can make informed decisions when selecting electives in high school.
