The School District of Tomahawk Board of Education's for governance is to:
Establish and maintain a structure that achieves a high impact on academic success, recognizing the need for trust, cooperation and partnership in developing a district that adheres to sustainable governing principles.
Governing Principles
District Mission and Vision
The Board of Education shares in the creation of a compelling mission and vision for the district, and maintains fidelity to the mission and vision as the board develops the strategic directions for the district.
Communication/Crucial Conversations
The Board strives to have the conversational skills needed to address difficult issues at the board table, and then leaving those discussions with a high regard for each other as board members and individuals.

The Board identifies and monitors the district's priorities, and tends to plans for assessment and improvement of this priority work as part of its normal operation.
Community Engagement
The Board provides structured opportunities to seek information from stakeholder groups in the community to provide reaction and input to the district's strategic initiatives.
Community Advocacy
The Board recognizes that it serves the community, and participates individually and collectively in activities that support the whole child, families, and our community as whole.
Board Development
The Board recognizes that its learning is not limited to monthly meetings and strives to create enhanced capacity both individually and as a Board through conference attendance, professional reading, participation in Board retreats, and school site visits.
Board Evaluation
Board member self-reflection, board assessment around its governance practices, and 360 degree evaluation from the district stakeholder groups are routinely completed to assist the board in growth and performance both individually and in the board as a whole.
Advocacy for Excellence
The Board advances continual improvement in the District vital signs by seeking input from educational experts and asking for multiple views of recommendation on programs and initiatives brought before the board before taking action.
Working with Administration
To advance the District's priority work, the Board recognizes the need to work with the administration in an atmosphere of cooperation, trust and open communication. An open door policy is practiced and both the board and administration adhere to the "no surprise" rule.
Policy Development
The Board Maintains an efficient District policy manual by revising existing policies, working with administration to develop new policies, and eliminating policies that are no longer necessary or are out dated.
