Resource Hour Structure - Update
Resource Hour is a 37 minute academic period that is scheduled at the end of each day. Tomahawk High School has operated a Resource Hour at the end of the day for several years. Resource Hour creates a block of time during the day that is consistent with every student and teacher in the building. Common time for students to work with staff on various academic needs has proven to be extremely valuable over time. Tomahawk High School is continuing to advance based on the needs of our students and has determined that updating Resource Hour will allow us to provide additional supports and opportunities to students.
Student goals of Resource Hour are focused on Academic & Career Planning (ACP), Academic Intervention, Enrichment and Literacy. There will be a change in format this year that allows for better meeting student needs. Staff will develop a weekly schedule of Resource Hour sessions to address the various areas noted above. These sessions will be available Tuesday through Friday. Staff are very excited with the format because of the flexibility it offers to students meeting their needs and also the increased efficiency assisting students.
ACP examples:
- learning inventory survey,
- college investigation, job shadow,
- career presentations from business/industry experts,
- site visits, etc.
Intervention examples:
- chemistry lab make up,
- advanced placement study session,
- math homework assistance,
- small group collaboration, etc.
Enrichment examples:
- jazz band,
- exploring 3D printers,
- how to plan a backpacking trip to Canada,
- food culture, etc
Students will report to their assigned “Homeroom” every Monday during Resource Hour. THS will continue the practice of “Reading Monday” when all students, teachers, counselors and administrators participate in recreational reading. Studies show that the level of a student’s literacy skills are directly related to academic success. The more we read, the stronger our literacy skills become. Students read text of their own choice and often share things that they are learning with others for the sake of discussion.
Monday Homeroom will also serve as a time when students verify their needs and select what sessions they will be reporting to Tuesday through Friday during Resource Hour. Teachers will also have the ability to assign students to a specific session to best support them.
Students will be educated and trained on this system during the first week of school with the intention of implementing the structure during the second week of school.
